Mozart 40 for secondary students

We discovered that Symphony No. 40 by Mozart is on the GCSE syllabus and were invited to present this work to the students at the Heathland School. The event was well attended not only by those students directly involved but also by those who were older, younger and even from feeder primary schools, and by parents.

The format was a presentation in words and music (by the RO) by Philip Hesketh including Mozart's place in the development of western classical music, his personality, the structure of the piece, the psychological meaning of key elements, and so on. Then after a short interval we played the whole energetic symphony to enthusiastic applause.

We are very fortunate in having received some financial support for the extra costs of this educational event from the HR Taylor Charitable Trust.

Young artists evening - we were joined by two promising young soloists who were invited to play a concerto/solo piece with the orchestra on one of our rehearsal evenings. The aim of these events is to provide young musicicans with an early opportunity to interact with an orchestra and gain feedback from our Artistic Dirctor.

On the same evening, we workshopped an original piece by a 16 year old composer studying at a local school. Both orchestra and composer found the experience illuminating and great fun.

Non-stop Sponsored Play-In Concert - Richmond Orchestra with Macmillan Cancer Support

The publicity for this event said:

At last you can actually conduct your favourite piece or play your favourite instrumental solo or sing with the orchestra or even dance to the orchestra

An entertaining and light hearted way to make some money for good causes, to make music and to have fun.

It was a highly successful fundraiser run by Macmillan and the Orchestra in partnership. The non-stop music making, including Beethoven 7, the Grieg piano concerto, baroque, classical and comtemporary music lasted for over 4 hours.
